Get Over Yourself!

I just saw something in the entertainment section of the newspaper that just struck me as odd.  I mean, it just jumped out at me from the page, smacked me in the head and said: "This is odd!"  Something about an "invite mic."  First it started out as an "open mic," then it gets referred to as an "open invite mic," and then it eventually is referred to as an "invite mic."  How does this occur?  Well let me tell you, it goes something like this:
First the host of the open mic, who we'll call Jerky J Bungwipe (to keep his name anonymous), feels as if the reason behind the decline in attendance at his open mic is primarily due to the fact that everyone that plays at it stinks.  Everyone but him of course.  So he turns it into an open invite mic, meaning that the mic is only open to the people who are invited up to the mic by Jerky himself.  After realizing that it really wasn't an open mic anymore, Jerky decides to drop the open part of the name.  Which is just as well because it made no sense anyway.
So we finally get to the "invite mic."  Jerky then comes to the realization that people still aren't coming to his ?mic.  Could it be because of him?  Probably.   You see, Jerky has the stage presence of a lump of turd.  And, like a lump of turd, he just sits there, dormant, stinking up the stage.  Maybe (and this is just theoretical at this point) he should consider doing something to liven up his act.  Maybe a little comedy, a little personality, or even (perish the thought) a little charm.
But comedy would be beneath him.  Because that would be a detraction from his serious musicianship.  In other words, he just takes himself entirely too seriously.  But what about those bands who don't take themselves that seriously?  What about those that like to have a good time?  They often do very well for themselves in the area of attracting a crowd or following.  After all, Most people who like to go out and see a band do so for the purpose of having a good time.
When people take themselves too seriously, it is often because they lack humility.  A lack of humility can sometimes impede one's own ability to succeed.  Or at least their ability to draw people to their "open mic," or whatever their mic is called.  Sometimes arrogance shows.  And people generally aren't entertained by that.  Hey Jerky, get over yourself!
